Butheina Kazim: Cinema Akil is an independent cinema platform that brings quality films from across the world to the audiences in the UAE. Launched in 2014 as a nomadic cinema, Cinema Akil has held over 60 pop-up cinemas attracting over 35,000 attendees in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. In September 2018, Cinema Akil opened its first permanent location in Al Quoz, Dubai, making it the GCC’s first arthouse cinema. Cinema Akil’s flagship home is brought to you in partnership with Alserkal Avenue. T: Who are the people who come to Cinema Akil? Do you think they are looking for an escape? BK: Going to the cinema has always been either an act of escape or one of surrender. Our audiences tend to be of the latter variety, in search of insight, deep perception and mindful living in a hyper-consumerist city; finding enrichment is always going to be a priority. T: What’s next for you? BK: Our goal is to continue to offer a community focused cinematic experience for the people of the city. We continuously aim to collaborate on partnerships that are likeminded in their aim to broaden horizons through the language of cinema. We're focusing on fine tuning our lineups, creating more festivals and introducing new programming slots. T: Why did you decide to collaborate with Tryano on this campaign? BK: This campaign sought out several like-minded individuals who have followed their instincts despite the odds and built something they believed in; I identified with that experience and so decided to be part of the conversation. T: How do you disconnect and escape from your busy schedule and life? BK: My Pandora's box consists of a conscious variety of escapes، where I choose to project, retreat, and reflect in the company of books, animals, long conversations, caffeine, music, candy, traveling. T: When is your next escape, is it alone, with family or friends? and why did you choose this destination? BK: I travel whenever possible and whenever the opportunity comes my way. These days it usually involves going away for a day or two on work-related trips. My next journey will likely either be to Berlin or Zagora. My wish list for this year includes Addis Ababa, Kiev, Lisbon or Dubrovnik.
